SWEDISH FILM INSTITUTE
The
Swedish Film Institute (Svenska Filminstitutet), established
in 1963, is a foundation whose operations are regulated by an agreement
between the state on one side, and the film- and television industry
on the other.
The Institute has an annual
turnover of approximately US$ 40 million, and is financed by grants
from the state as well as by a levy on cinema tickets and video
films. The funding agreement is based on the principle that those
who exhibit films should contribute to the financing of new Swedish
films.
The main tasks of the
Swedish Film Institute are:
- to support the production of quality
Swedish films
- to promote the import, distribution
and exhibition of quality films
- to preserve films and materials of
interest to cinematic history
- to promote Swedish cinematic culture
internationally
The Swedish Film Institute
promotes Swedish cinema internationally through the International
Department which handles all festival matters, international relations/organisations
and presentation of Swedish film weeks. The International Department
also publishes information material for the international market.
The Institute works sometimes internationally
with the Institutes of other Nordic countries under the umbrella
Scandinavian Films.
